SCHOOLS REJECT LABOUR’S FREE BREAKFAST CON

A media Release issued on the March 08th, 2007

COMMENTING on today’s reports that Labour’s free school breakfast scheme has a take-up of less than six per cent of all primary school children, the Welsh Conservatives’ education spokesman William Graham AM said:

“It is a damning indictment of the failure of this Labour policy that as little as six per cent of primary school children are receiving a free school breakfast.

“Labour was crystal clear in its 2003 manifesto that they would provide free breakfasts for ‘all primary school kids’. These figures show that schools across Wales have seen through this Labour con.

“Like so many other Labour policies, this was nothing more than an un-costed gimmick designed to win cheap headlines.

“By targeting specific, less-affluent areas, Labour would have done more to tackle issues surrounding children’s diets than it has done with its failed attempts to roll out this scheme across the whole of Wales.”
