EDUCATE PUPILS NOT ONLY OF THEIR RIGHTS BUT OF THEIR RESPONSIBILITIES TOO

media release issued on Thursday 15 February 2007

William Graham – Conservative Assembly Spokesman for Education – responding to the Estyn report ‘Values education: an evaluation of provision of education for the promotion of social responsibility and respect for others’ which highlighted that ‘most secondary schools in Wales must do more to promote social responsibility and respect for others’.

“It is alarming that this report should identify that ‘many schools still do not have a clear understanding of ‘social responsibility’ or ‘values education’ and how to apply it to everyday school life’. It is vital that citizenship is established as a subject within the National Curriculum”.

“I share the views expressed by Susan Lewis (Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Education and Training in Wales) that ‘it is vital that leaders and managers see promotion of social responsibility and respect for others as an important part of a pupil’s education, and integrate it into all areas of school life’” .

Conservatives believe that teaching should be centred upon the core subjects, together with ‘citizenship’ – educating pupils not only of their rights, but engendering a responsibility for their own healthy life style, the respect other people’s equality of rights, their property and their neighbourhood environment.
