SCHOOLS NEED
FLEXIBILITY ON WELSH BACC ROLL-OUT

COMMENTING on today’s news that the Welsh Baccalaureate exam is set to be rolled out to schools across Wales, the Welsh Conservatives’ education spokesman William Graham AM said:
“The Welsh Baccalaureate has yet to gain widespread recognition among universities and employers.
“There are also concerns at the drop-out rate in the Welsh Baccalaureate and whether it equips students will the necessary skills to continue their education or enter the world of work.
“Confidence in the examination system needs to be restored, including among students, teachers, universities and potential employers.
“While Wales may be leading England in developing a new style of education qualification, Britain still lags behind the rest of Europe in meeting the requirements of a global education system.
“The Education Minister needs to clarify whether she will force the Welsh Baccalaureate on schools or whether the qualification will be optional.
“Head teachers need the flexibility to offer an examination system which best suits the needs of their school, teachers and students – not the one-size fits all approach which seems to be the aim of the Labour Assembly Government.”
