GWENT AM CALLS FOR MORE IMPROVEMENTS TO CAERPHILLY ROAD NETWORK

A media release from William Graham AM on 27th February  2008

William Graham AM today called for the dualling of the A472 road from Ystrad Mynach to Maesycwmmer.

Pointing to the road restructuring occurring in the area to complement the building of the planned new hospital for Caerphilly County Borough named as Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, the South Wales AM called for the Welsh Assembly Government to commit to extensively improve the transport infrastructure around Caerphilly.

Graham, the Conservative AM for South Wales East, commented:

‘The improvements to the road network in and around Ystrad Mynach are encouraging in the light of the heavy traffic flow at peak times at the intersection of the A469/ A472 but simply do not go far. Improving the transport infrastructure within Caerphilly County Borough is integral to the area’s economic development; to this end I would advocate a series of improvements giving rise to a dual carriageway from Newbridge to Caerphilly’.

‘The Labour- Plaid Cymru coalition Welsh Assembly Government have not shown sufficient commitment to improving the road network in Wales. The One Wales agreement does not offer the mandate for the 21st Century transport infrastructure that Wales needs. Examples of success such as the PFI funded Sirhowy Enterprise Way in Islwyn are few and far between, with the Welsh Assembly Government all too often dragging their feet over major transport projects such as the much-needed M4 Relief Road.’
