ESSENTIAL SERVICES IN WALES DESERVE GREATER CONSIDERATION

A media release on Wednesday 14th November 2007

William Graham (Conservative AM for South Wales East) responding to the Local Government settlement announced by the Assembly Government today.

“Local government has always been a low priority for the Assembly Government. Talk of ‘partnership’ disappears whenever tough choices have to be made”.

“Labour Government at Westminster has provided less financial resources for the Assembly and therefore less for Local Government. They were able to find twice the National Assembly budget (£14bn) to bail out Northern Rock, a private profit making bank”.

“Local Government’s are the first-line providers of essential services in Wales and deserve greater consideration”.

“With Local Government elections next May, Councils throughout Wales face very difficult choices in continuing to provide front-line services and this cynical ploy by Labour resulting in some councils getting 1% increase should be the prime indication of voting intentions next year”.
