AM WARNS ASSEMBLY GOVERNMENT MUST DO MORE ON FLY-TIPPING IN NEWPORT

15TH NOVEMBER 2006

Welsh Conservative AM William Graham has accused the Assembly Government of failing to make significant progress in the battle against illegal waste dumping in Wales.

The South Wales East AM today challenged the Environment Minister over Labour’s inability to adequately fine those found guilty of the offence.

Speaking after exchanges in the Assembly Mr Graham said:

“I was disappointed with the Minister’s response.

“Rubbish such as that regularly dumped in the Coedkernew area of Newport, including building materials and hazardous waste, has blighted the lives of some local people.

“The Assembly Government should re-consider the guidance it gives councils and law enforcement agencies on fly-tipping.

“With more resources and a greater willingness to take action against offenders the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 would prove a far more effective piece of legislation.

“‘The problem of fly-tipping is deserving of much more attention than that which the Assembly Government grants it.

“It poses serious environmental health risks. Dumped rubbish lining the A48 in Marshfield is an all too familiar sight and in the area ecologically significant waterways have been seriously polluted by waste.”
