WRONGDOERS PROFIT AT THE EXPENSE OF THE INNOCENT?

THE ISSUE OF EARLY RELEASE AND THE APPROPRIATE USE OF ‘OPEN PRISONS’

ARE MAJOR CAUSES OF CONCERN SAYS WILLIAM GRAHAM AM

a media release issued on  Tuesday 1 April 2008 by William Graham AM

William Graham (Conservative AM for South Wales East) responding  to the news that two sex offenders have been released early because of prison overcrowding.

“These people in jail because they were convicted of serious offences – not relatively minor sex offences; as inexplicably claimed by the Ministry of Justice”.

“The public will have little confidence that these people were released only 18 days early, because they will be aware that their sentences will have already been reduced under the normal remission rules”.

“I share the view of the South Wales Argus that we are left with ‘the conclusion that the wrongdoer profits at the expense of the innocent’. The public are not given the protection they deserve as criminals are not receiving realistic sentences”.

“The issue of early release, together with appropriate use of ‘open prisons’ are major causes of concern”.
