FIRST MINISTER FAILS TO OFFER ASSEMBLY SUPPORT

FOR POLICE PAY

A media release by William Graham AM on 15th January

William Graham (Conservative AM for South Wales East) accused First Minister Rhodri Morgan of failing to commit Assembly Government support for Police Pay.

During First Minister’s questions in Plenary today, I questioned Rhodri Morgan about the Assembly Government’s support for our Police Forces.

“I highlighted the vital service provided by Police Forces throughout Wales and the duty we have to acknowledge the duties they undertake on our behalf”.

“Their pay award was determined by an independent review and police officers in Scotland, Northern Ireland and Isle of Man police have had their pay award backdated and paid in full. It is only police officers in Wales and England who are affected by the failure to honour their pay rise”.

“Community Support Officers in Wales have had their full pay award honoured”.

“The Welsh Assembly Government’s commitment to ‘Public Service delivery’ appears to be fading, especially in the light of the action it took to implement the Nurses’ pay award, as the First Minister dodged giving a specific reply, ‘hiding’ behind Police Pay not being a devolved issue”.

“This is no excuse for stating Assembly support and the representations it will make on behalf of our Police Forces to the UK Government”.
