BUS ATTACKS COST NEWPORT TAXPAYERS

Ł5000 PER MONTH

a media release issued on Friday 15 December 2006

William Graham (Conservative AM for South Wales East) responding to the latest statistics for attacks and vandalism on Newport buses:

“In average an average week there be 2 attacks on vehicle and 1 window broken on buses run by Newport Transport. These attacks cost the taxpayer Ł5000 per month”.

“Newport Transport have also reported 98 anti-social attacks during 2006, including 6 assaults on drivers”.

“I acknowledge the collaboration between Gwent Police had Newport Transport to tackle this issue, most notably their award-winning DVD highlighting the dangers of throwing missiles”.

“The realisation that these dangers can not be underestimated was highlighted earlier this month when a woman needed hospital treatment for an eye injury after an object hurled at a bus on Corporation Road smashed a window”.

“I wholeheartedly support Newport Transport Manager Mr Roberts comments concerning parents knowing what their children get up to, and for them to become more attentive to their children’s actions. I also share his fears that one day someone may be killed in one of the mindless attacks”.
