LIMITED BLUETONGUE VACCINE CONCERN AS SUNNIER, WARMER WEATHER

INCREASES POTENTIAL SPREAD OF VIRUS INTO WALES

a media release issued on  Tuesday 1 April 2008 by William Graham AM

William Graham (Conservative AM for South Wales East) outlines his concern that with the approach of spring there is the possibility that an increased number of midges could result in further incidents of Bluetongue virus infection.

“While the majority of people will be looking forward to sunnier, warmer weather; our farmers will be concerned at the potential of Bluetongue to spread into Wales”.

“I am concerned that not enough vaccine had been secured in Wales to achieve the target vaccination coverage of 80 %”.

"We need to ensure the most effective use of this limited supply of vaccine to achieve the maximum protection for Welsh livestock”.
