“A MAN’S GOT TO DO WHAT A
MAN’S GOT TO DO”
This quote from the legendary actor John Wayne encapsulates the
need to face up to your challenges, whatever the
odds.
William Graham (Conservative AM for South Wales East) explains
why it is time to engage with all the influences which
determine career choice and ensure equal opportunities for
everyone to gain more active roles in all aspects of economic
and social life.
“We must remember, that in UK terms, the ’very highest glass
ceiling’ was broken by Helen Sharman; when in 1991 she became
the first Briton to fly into space”.
“The focus, Conservative led UK Government, upon manufacturing
industries to lead the economy recovery means it is imperative
that we ensure everyone is allow the opportunity to maximise
their potential; especially in fields that have traditionally
been dominated by males, or females”.
“We need to open up career pathways. We need to remove the
barriers between education, where girls achieve higher academic
qualifications, and achievement in economic and social
life”.
“We must also inspire all our young people to take-up studies
of technologies, engineering and sciences. Subjects vital for a
successful economic future, but are not so popular with today’s
students”.
“Manufacturing industries demands qualified people to undertake
the research and development for new products and new
production techniques. We need to ensure that we not only
provide the talents demanded by Welsh industry, but that we
allow everyone to realise their full potential – not a
potential limited by perceptions of their social or gender
levels of achievement”.
